Dispensing and DEA Requirements
Dispensing Medication as a DO in Arizona
Osteopathic physicians (DOs) licensed in Arizona who plan to dispense medication directly to patients must first register with the Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners. This registration ensures compliance with state regulations and patient safety standards. To maintain these standards, the Board conducts random inspections of dispensing clinics to verify proper storage, labeling, recordkeeping, and adherence to applicable laws. What to Expect During an Inspection. Additionally, DOs dispensing controlled substances must comply with federal requirements, including obtaining a valid DEA registration and completing the necessary DEA Form 224 for initial registration or DEA Form 224a for renewal. Physicians must also adhere to DEA prescribing and recordkeeping guidelines to prevent diversion and ensure patient safety. Failure to meet these state and federal requirements may result in disciplinary action.
If you have had a Registration to Dispense and are NOT Renewing it, YOU MUST use the Disposal of Inventory of Drugs and Devices form, available on the Form(s) tab, and disclose IN WRITING how you dispose of your inventory within 30 days of expiration pursuant to A.R.S. § 32-1871(F). This is required whether you are in private practice or employed. An example of how to complete this form is included on the second page of this document.
