ARIZONA BOARD OF OSTEOPATHIC EXAMINERS IN MEDICINE AND SURGERY
GUIDELINES: Use of Opioid Analgesics in the Treatment of Chronic Pain
(Adopted February 22, 2014)

INTRODUCTION:
The Arizona Board of Osteopathic Examiners in Medicine and Surgery has adopted the FSMB’s (Federation of State Medical Boards) policy on “Model Policy on the Use of Opioid Analgesics in the Treatment of Chronic Pain,” (July 2013) with one modification regarding the development of a treatment plan and goal.

Treatment and goals should be established as early as possible. The treatment plan should contain information supporting the selection of therapies, both pharmacologic (including medications other than opioids) and nonpharmacologic, as well as the consideration of Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) and physical therapy or other options.
